Not sure how many times but please don't stop at Terrapin with that show. It is famous for the first Terrapin and Estimated but the HSF and Eyes>Dancin' are killers!! Listen to what Phil does between Eyes and Dancin'. It is one of my favorite Phil moments.

Oh yeah, I always like this Sugaree too!!

Great, great show no doubt for all the reasons you mentioned. But, and I am in no way trying to stir the ire of yesterday's issue as it has been discussed in the past, I freely admit that Terrapin always leaves me a little flat. It is like they are trying to show how technically proficient they can be. That is all well and good, but technicality is not what draws me into their shows. Emotion and spontaneity...that's the ticket.
IMHO of course.

Oh, yeah, I still respect Jerry.

First Terrapin I heard was the one from 5/19/77, and it will probably always be my favorite. Not that any of them are that distinguishable from each other; in particular, I freely admit that every version from 1977 sounds almost exactly the same, even up to the little solo Jerry does in between the verses in Lady With A Fan.

But I still love the song, repetitive as it is, despite its lack of potential for any jamming. I will say that the later versions in '78 and '79 seem to stretch it a little further out, and the ending instrumental that in '77 was just repeated ad infinitum until they got sick of it can sometimes lead to some nice jamming and interesting transitions in the later years.

Well everyone has the right to an opinion, even if it is a really stupid one, correct? However in this case I happen to agree with you. I don't skip Terrapin but I can't say I miss it when I find my self entrenched in '74 as you mentioned the other day. My point on this show was that it is a great show because of the issues you mentioned, but not in Terrapin, in the other tunes. Although if you are looking for emotion and spontaneity then '74 is a good place to hang out.

I like it placed first, that way it does not become a clunker in the middle of a smokin' second set. And for those of us who were late to shows I can personally say I would feel much better about missing Terrapin than Bertha to open any show.

Perfectly said. There were too many shows when they were just flying along when, much to my horror, up pops Terrapin and Jerry yet again gargling carpet tacks and fingernail clippings.

LMAO! Funniest line of the day!

"Terrapin" really does generate some deeply divided opinions. To many it is a classic anthem, to others a set-killer of the highest order.

To me the best version by far was the Pembroke Pines DP show from '77 where they just wound into it from "Wharf Rat" and did the rolling start from "inspiration, move me brightly" through the end. That's really the best part of the song; the begining really is pretty draggy. Then they went into "Dew". It's a pity they didn't do this more often.

I'm sure the guy doing the impression was much easier to work with than the real Brando at the time though.

We are true masters of diversion.

If we had been in France during WW2, we would have ended up baffling the advancing Nazi war machine with unrelated stories and questions about how their incessant use of natural resources to feed their nationalistic agression was resulting in the severe lack of pencils in the world. Then, if they still insisted on advancing, we would have pulled out the secret weapon: a well timed "methinks" followed with a deafening Donna screech.

C'mon...the choice is obvious! She's as aligned with Petain as a molded slice of brie; unlike him, she never would've been the savior of Verdun (at least he did some things right--that's the trouble with living long enough--Churchill redeemed himself [like all good PMs?] whereas Petain ended up in the shit house).

Of course, now that we really have found ourselves smack dab in WWII trivia, we might as move the whole scene to Rick's, so if I get to play Rick (please! Miss D as Ilsa?), you can be Claude Rains and Dire gets to be oily little Lorre...

I can tie this back to the dead! I once watched Casablanca at the US Ambassador's home in Casablanca (spent summer of '86 "studying" in Marrakech at first US-Moroccan exchange program; saw James Brown and Jimmy Cliff in the Casablanca stadium that summer)and at the party before hand the student band played Dead cover tunes (I especially recall Bertha).

Funny thing was that during the world cup that year, we could see French games in color on big tv at compound in Marrakech but when Moroccan game started the "fuse" blew and had to watch on small B&W. (Beckenbauer's final year for Germany?) Damn colonialists.

Oh, now wait--it's not that bad...it started with Terrapin, went to the old Terrapin Bashing Thread (linked above), then, included diversions to skies, which led us to France, and WWII had been mentioned, so this got us to Vichy, and how could you not think of Casablanca, the movie, in that regard...then, we boys (yes, juvenile we be), with our penchant for role playing, of course inserted ourselves in the movie, and then amazingly, BD linked it back to the DEAD with his experiences in North Africa.

DEAD? Well, okay...lacking just a bit...

Of course, it is your right to have these bizarre, sick and pervy sexual fantasies, but don't involve me in them.

You really are one very sad and fecked-up boy. No wonder you have a drink problem. You should call a doctor to investigate your head.

Come think of it, what you are doing here is exactly what Tito does: publicly involving people in his sicko, pervy fantasies. No wonder he likes to pick on you. Hang on, maybe you actually * are * Tito.

Seriously, all flaming aside: While you think you are somehow showing that you can assert yourself in a macho fashion and impress your peers, what you are actually doing is demonstrating you own inadequacies and fears about your own sexuality. I feel very sorry for you.
